others-8.jpgDear Educators,

It is an exciting time here at the Norman Bird Sanctuary!  With over 75 all-new field trip, outreach, and afterschool programs for grades PreK-12, our staff can’t wait to share the world of nature with you and your students.  Through our wide variety of engaging, interactive, and multidisciplinary courses, we hope to inspire learners of all ages to take an active role in conservation.

The benefits of quality environmental education at all stages of learning are well documented.  Studies have linked EE with better performance on standardized tests, increased self esteem and physical well-being, better concentration in school, and greater enthusiasm for learning.  All compelling reasons to schedule an exciting and educational experience with NBS!

Choose to visit the Sanctuary through a field trip program, where our 300-acre outdoor classroom serves as a natural venue for scientific observations, environmental reflection, and creative discoveries.  Or let us bring the outdoors to you in one of our unique in-school outreach programs or afterschool courses.

middle-and-high-school-programs-a.jpgNBS education programs emphasize active learning through hands-on exploration and inquiry-based teaching methods, and all offerings are tailored to help teachers meet Rhode Island’s Grade Span Expectations in science.  They are also aligned with the KITES and GEMS.NET curricula and meet the NAAEE’s Guidelines for Excellence in Nonformal Environmental Education Programs.  You will be amazed by the material covered in a single program – students will be immersed in science, history, language arts, music, and art during every visit!

Our teaching staff is composed of professional educators dedicated to providing quality, age-appropriate instruction about the natural world.  Their dynamic teaching style helps to engage and excite audiences of all ages and backgrounds.  In all settings, we strive to keep group sizes small to ensure individual attention and hands-on learning experiences.

On behalf of the Norman Bird Sanctuary’s education team, we look forward to working with you and your students this year – together, we will explore, investigate, and discover our region’s amazing natural resources!
